The difference depends on the country where your document will be used. An apostille is used when the receiving country is part of the Hague Convention. Authentication (sometimes called a Certificate of Authentication) is used when the receiving country is not part of the Hague Convention.
Both serve the same purpose: they confirm that a U.S. document is official so it can be accepted in another country. The type you need is based entirely on the destination country’s requirements.
